Growth That Works for Footscray
Footscray needs infrastructure that meets real community needs, planning decisions that are properly scrutinised and development that delivers public value.
Growth can bring jobs, homes, services and investment. But poorly planned development can also put pressure on transport, open space, roads, community facilities and existing neighbourhoods.
The question should not simply be how much development can happen. It should be whether the infrastructure, services and public benefits are adequate for the people who will live, work and spend time here.
My priorities
1. Scrutinise major planning decisions
I will seek clear information about significant local proposals, including their expected benefits, costs, environmental impacts, infrastructure requirements and consultation processes.
I will raise concerns with the responsible ministers and planning authorities where decisions appear to overlook local needs or lack adequate explanation.
2. Link growth with infrastructure
I will advocate for planning that considers transport, roads, public spaces, community facilities and essential services alongside development.
Where infrastructure commitments are made, I will seek clarity about funding, delivery timeframes, responsibilities and how progress will be measured.
3. Protect green space and community assets
Public open space, mature trees and established community assets should be properly considered when infrastructure options are assessed.
At McIvor Reserve, my position is already clear: I support protecting its green space and mature trees. Alternatives should be properly considered when planning sporting infrastructure.
4. Seek transparent consultation
Residents should have access to understandable information about significant proposals and a meaningful opportunity to express their views before decisions are finalised.
I will advocate for transparent processes and seek explanations when important community concerns appear not to have been adequately addressed.
5. Examine the future of the old Footscray Hospital site carefully
The future of the old Footscray Hospital site is an important issue for the community. I want to understand the available options, the community’s expectations and the relevant planning, heritage, housing, open-space and public-benefit considerations before forming a position.
I am seeking further engagement and information, including a clear response from the Reimagining Old Footscray Hospital Community Group. I have not yet formed a position on the site’s future.
I will not endorse a particular outcome before examining the options and understanding the evidence. Once I have sufficient information, I will explain my position publicly and set out the reasons for it.
What I can realistically do as an MP
Planning decisions and infrastructure projects involve different government departments, planning authorities, councils and, in some cases, private landowners. An MP cannot unilaterally determine the outcome of every project.
My role would be to seek information, scrutinise decisions, advocate for community interests, question responsible decision-makers and push for transparent processes and clear accountability.
I will distinguish between my own policy positions and matters that remain subject to further investigation or formal decisions.
How residents can hold me accountable
If elected, I will work to report on:
- Major planning and infrastructure issues I have pursued.
- Questions raised about costs, benefits, impacts and consultation.
- Responses received from the responsible authorities.
- The status of important local proposals and any position I form after further examination.
My commitment: Footscray deserves thoughtful planning, transparent decisions and infrastructure that serves the community — not promises made before the facts are understood.
